You are Living Evidence
As a young girl, I had the opportunity to visit the historic Diamond Caverns in Kentucky with my parents. My standard mode of operation as a child was adventure, adventure, and more adventure, so this was like a dream come true. Descend into a cave that had been discovered in the 1800's? I'm in!
It must have been an off day because there were only a few others on the tour with us. It was a 1/2 mile tour and the guide warned us that it would be a strenuous (but well worth it) hour-long trek.
The tour was indeed full of wonders, but what I'll never forget was what it was like to walk into the thick darkness with very minimal light, and then experience what it felt like to have all the backlights turn on to illuminate the vast wonders of the cavern. The darkness was no match for what the lights had the power to reveal and awaken.
When Paul writes to the church at Ephesus, "For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness, and truth)..." he is reminding them that the darkness they're experiencing in this world is no match for the Light that is ALIVE in them... the Light that awakens the world to new life through Jesus.
But what does being the light of the world mean? How do we bear the fruit of the light? In a day where it can feel like darkness is thick and there is much that might feel hidden, what does it look like for us to lead a generation to live as children of light?
Hebrews 1:3 reminds us that Jesus is the overwhelming brightness of God's glory, sustaining all things by His powerful word. His once and for all sacrifice is what made us children of God, and through faith in Him we are transformed from darkness to light.
Those who have gone before us set an amazing example of what it looks like to radiate the glory of the Son... Hebrews 11:1 tells us that the fruit of the light in their lives - what they were commended for- that fruit and faith is as a good as an eye-witness account that would hold up in a court of law.
Their lives - fully awakened to new life in Him - were proof that He is exactly who He says He is!
To be children of the Light is to be living evidence that He is the faithful, covenant-keeping, almighty, beginning and end, One True God.
To bear the fruit of the Light is to provide evidence to a world in darkness that He is making all things new, and that He is alive!
But to live awake is not the simple or easy, wide road we can often find ourselves longing for. It is truth we must consistently remind our hearts of... and that is why we will be turning our attention to how we lead a generation as Living Evidence at Children's Pastors Conference 2021 (CPC21).
We will gather together to behold the Light in prayer and worship.
We will look to the ways our lives and leadership are sustained by Jesus Himself.
We will explore the way we reflect Jesus in this day and time, and we will be reminded to protect the way we abide in the Light.
We'll discover the way the fruit of the Light manifests itself in our homes and ministries.
We'll remember that this discipleship journey is costly, but we'll rejoice in the ways the Light effects this world and glorifies God!
As we dig deeply into the ways we are called to be Living Evidence in this world, the Lord has given me a deep sense that we will all catch our breath as we gain vision for the ways He illuminates the wonders of all He is doing in His creation.
Friend, you lead the most strategic and futuristic ministry of the Church... and you are proving to a generation with your very life that He is exactly Who He says He is.
That is a role weighted with responsibility and privilege, and that is exactly why I believe it is critical we take a few days to come in close and consider these truths together.
We'll gather again so we can return strengthened by the reality that He has empowered us to be Living Evidence to awaken a generation to the truth that He is the Light of the World.
As I walked away from that cave, I remember never being so grateful for the light. It empowered me to see, to fully grasp what was before me, and to safely make the journey ahead of me. As we consider our roles as children of light today, may we ask the Lord to equip us to empower these precious children we lead to see, to fully grasp the wonder of the gospel, and to have the faith to follow Him wherever He leads them.
I'm praying for you, my friends, and praising Him for the way you live as evidence that He is alive and everything He says He is!
